A quiet argument for the schedule everyone else has abandoned.
In most schools, the morning goes something like this. Children arrive from the car line, still holding the residue of the drive over. The hurried breakfast. The missing shoe. The sibling squabble in the back seat. The goodbye at the door that maybe went well and maybe did not. They walk in and are asked, almost immediately, to sit down. To be still. To pay attention. To learn.
Recess, if it happens at all, is scheduled for late morning or after lunch. A reward, essentially, for surviving the first three hours.
At The Laurel School, we do it the other way. Children arrive, hang up their bags, and go outside.
Before math. Before reading. Before the calendar and the morning meeting and any of the work the day will ask of them.
And there is a reason for this that has nothing to do with tradition, and everything to do with what is actually happening in a young child’s brain at 8:15 in the morning.
What is going on inside the child who just arrived
The prefrontal cortex is the region of the brain responsible for focus, self-control, working memory, and impulse regulation. It is also the last part of the human brain to develop. In a five, six, or seven year old, it is still years away from anything resembling maturity. It is the part of your child that helps her wait her turn, hold two ideas at once, notice her own emotion before it becomes a storm.
It is also the part of the brain that goes offline first when a child is under stress.
Cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, is naturally high in the morning. That is normal biology, and it is part of what wakes us up. But children arriving at school carry more than the baseline. The transition from home to classroom is a documented stressor for young children, one that measurably elevates cortisol above resting levels. For some children, that elevation lasts for weeks after any change in routine.
Elevated cortisol does not just make a child feel anxious. It quiets the prefrontal cortex. The very region we are about to ask them to use, the region that lets a child sit and listen and think, is the region the morning has most likely dampened.
So we can begin the day by asking a stress-flooded child to perform executive function. Or we can help her body come back to itself first.
What outdoor play actually does
Physical activity in children, especially unstructured, self-directed movement outdoors, has one of the most consistent effects in the developmental research. It strengthens executive function. Attention, working memory, impulse control, cognitive flexibility. The exact capacities a classroom is about to demand.
Movement burns off surplus adrenaline. Fresh air and sunlight support a healthier cortisol curve across the school day. Running, climbing, swinging, chasing. The rhythmic, whole-body activities of a child at play engage the lower brain regions that regulate emotion, and in doing so they free the prefrontal cortex to come back online.
The child who comes in from twenty minutes outside is not the same child who walked in from the car. She has been given time to arrive.
Why this matters for the way children learn
We do not send children out first because we think play is more important than reading. We do it because we want the reading to actually land.
A child whose nervous system is still braced from the morning cannot fully hear the story. She cannot fully feel the letters her pencil is making. She is sitting at her desk, but the part of her that learns is not yet in the room.
By the time our children return from morning recess, cheeks flushed and hair a little wild, they are settled in a way that no amount of “please sit still” could produce. Their bodies have done what they needed to do. Their brains are now free.
Then we teach.
What this looks like at The Laurel School
Our children arrive at 8:00. They put away their things, greet their teachers, and go outside, every morning, in almost every weather. They run. They swing. They dig in the garden. They negotiate the small treaties of the sandbox. They fall and get up. They come back in at their own tempo, damp and hungry and ready.
Then we begin the day’s real work, reading and writing and math and wonder, with children whose bodies have already told their brains that they are safe.
This is not a scheduling accident. It is a decision, made deliberately, in service of how a young child actually learns.
For the parent wondering if this is enough
I know the instinct. If the day starts with play, is the school taking learning seriously? Will she fall behind? Is this soft?
Here is what we have found, and what the science supports. Children who begin the morning outside are more focused, more regulated, and more available for the deep work of a school day than children asked to skip that regulation and dive straight in. The recess is not time taken from learning. It is what makes the rest of the learning possible.
The quiet children who come inside at 8:30 and quietly, remarkably, learn to read are not learning in spite of the twenty minutes outside.
They are learning because of them.
