The Laurel Framework is the named educational methodology at the heart of The Laurel School. It is not borrowed from any single tradition, and it does not carry another institution's name. It was developed by educators who spent years studying what young children actually need to learn deeply, and then designed a school around those findings.

At its core, the Framework holds a single conviction: learning is not a straight line. It is a cycle. A child encounters something real, whether that is a living thing found along the James River, a problem that does not have one obvious answer, or a piece of literature that makes them feel something they cannot yet name. Then they sit with it. They reflect, question, and try to make sense of it. Then they act on what they now understand, and the cycle begins again. This rhythm of experience, reflection, and application is what produces genuine understanding. It is what separates children who have been taught from children who actually know.

The Laurel Framework brings that cycle together with two things many progressive approaches undervalue: direct instruction and structure. Children need teachers who teach. They need clear sequences in reading and mathematics. They need adults who can explain, model, and guide them through difficulty without retreating into the idea that children should always discover everything on their own. And they need to feel, without question, that they belong here. Not as a sentiment, but as a condition of learning itself. A child who does not feel known cannot learn at full capacity. Small classes, typically 8 to 12 students, are not a limitation of what we can offer. They are the offer itself. Smallness means teachers respond to the actual child in front of them, not a general idea of what a child in a given grade should need. It means no one disappears. It means the school year begins with adults who already understand each child's story, and it ends with teachers who can describe, in specific terms, who that child has become.

Morning Meeting

Not a formality, but a genuine gathering. Children check in, speak, listen, and practice being part of a community before academic work begins.

Literacy Block

Structured and intentional: explicit phonics instruction, close reading, and writing that moves from a child's own ideas outward into craft and evidence.

Mathematics

Taught with care and sequence. Children build number sense, fluency, and conceptual understanding side by side.

Discovery Afternoons

Science, social studies, and time outdoors. Lunch is unhurried. The afternoon holds room for wonder, projects, and real investigation.

The Laurel Framework is its own approach. It is not Montessori, Reggio Emilia, or Waldorf. Parents ask this question often, and it deserves a direct answer. Those are thoughtful methodologies with real histories, and this is not a dismissal of any of them. But The Laurel School was designed from the ground up, drawing on the research and philosophy that best serves elementary-age children in this school, in this city, with this particular commitment to academic depth and human connection.
