We didn’t set out to build the loudest school in Richmond. We set out to build the best school for the child in front of us.
That distinction matters. In education, louder does not always mean better. Some schools are loud by trying to be everything to everyone. Broad, flashy programs. Sweeping promises. Mile-long lists of features.
The Laurel School made a different choice. We chose to narrow our focus so we can go deep. We chose to know every student by name, not just by their student number. We chose to build a school where doing everything well...thoughtfully and with care...is enough. That is what it means to be Quietly Remarkable.
Small Is Not a Limitation. It Is the Point.
Every choice we make at The Laurel School stems from our belief that kids learn best when they are known. When they are known by their teachers, by their community, and as unique individuals with particular strengths, curious minds, and their own way of viewing the world.
Which is why we keep our classrooms small. Believing that when we limit enrollment, we open doors for relationships. When a teacher has 6 students in her classroom instead of 26, she can offer each child the time and attention they deserve. She can recognize when a lightbulb goes off and when it doesn’t. She can pivot as needed to help each student learn in the way that works best for them. In other words, she can teach kids.
Relationships like that do not just nurture learning. They create safe spaces where children feel comfortable pushing themselves. Feeling brave enough to learn.
The World Beyond Our Walls
The James River, the parks, the museums, and the neighborhoods around us are not just places we visit on field trips. They are extensions of our classroom.
Our students come to know science at the water’s edge and history where it happened. They explore and discover every day with the knowledge that their world is full of wonders just waiting to be known.
Academic Depth and a Joyful Childhood Are Not in Conflict
A quiet assumption some schools make is that seriousness of academic study cannot coexist with childhood. That learning with depth means we need to pressure our kids. Test them. That academic achievement means sacrificing fun.
At The Laurel School, we believe kids can and should do both.
Kids at Laurel read deeply, and they play even deeper. They learn cursive handwriting and how to build a fort. They study with intention, and with wide-eyed wonder. Our students will be expected to think hard, work with care, and stretch beyond themselves year after year. But more importantly, they will never stop being trusted. Respected. Enjoyed.

The Laurel School was started by a group of educators who had been working in traditional schools for years. Teaching. Learning. Becoming experts in what works and what doesn’t. When we set out to create Laurel School, we were motivated by a belief that Richmond needed a school built differently. And we knew how to build it.
But building it for educators is not the same thing as building it for families. Every family that steps foot on campus knows The Laurel School will meet them where they are. Your kids will be seen. You’ll get answers to your questions. You will always know what is happening in school and why. We are in this together.
